Countertops are templated to installed cabinets, not to drawings, so they land in a fixed position in the schedule: cabinets set, template, fabricate, install, then plumbing final.
Material selection is a behaviour conversation before it is a color conversation. Quartz shrugs off most kitchen life but dislikes direct heat; natural stones vary in porosity and upkeep; porcelain slabs bring their own edge and fabrication considerations. The honest question is how the kitchen is actually used, and the answer narrows the material before the slab yard visit.
For natural stone and dramatic quartz patterns, the slab is the decision. Two slabs of the same name can look like different materials, so the specific slabs are viewed and tagged, and on bold patterns the fabricator's layout — which part of the slab lands where, how the island reads, whether a waterfall grain-matches — is reviewed before cutting.
Seam placement, overhang support and cutout locations are decided at template. They are worth reviewing then rather than discovering at install: a seam moved a metre at template is a conversation, the same seam at install is a fact. Overhangs beyond the material's span get steel or corbels planned, not hoped.
Install is followed immediately by the scopes that were waiting on it — sink hookup, faucet, cooktop connection. That is why a template delay ripples: everything downstream of the counter is queued behind the fabrication window.

Questions
Answers we can give honestly.
- Why can't the countertop be ordered with the cabinets?
- Because it is fabricated to the installed reality, not the drawing. Walls are not straight and cabinet runs land within tolerances; the template captures what is actually there. Ordering from drawings would guarantee gaps — the sequence exists to prevent exactly that.
- How long does the kitchen wait between template and counters?
- The fabrication window belongs to the fabricator and the material, so we do not quote it as a promise — but it is a known, scheduled gap, and the project plan uses it for work that does not need the counters. What matters is that nothing downstream is surprised by it.
- Will the island seam be visible?
- A seam is a made thing — tight, colour-matched, placed where the layout hides it best — but on most materials an honest answer is that you can find it if you look. Seam placement is reviewed at template so it lands where nobody's eye rests, and on bold patterns the layout review is where grain alignment gets decided.
