Flooring

Subfloor preparation and floor installation across tile, wood and resilient materials.

Most flooring complaints trace to the substrate. Slab flatness, moisture and movement joints decide whether tile cracks or a floating floor telegraphs every high spot. Preparation is the part of the job that is invisible when it is done properly.

Almost everything in the Valley is slab-on-grade, which shapes the flooring conversation in specific ways. Flatness is measured, not eyeballed — most manufacturers specify a tolerance, and grinding or self-leveling to meet it is normal scope, not an extra. And a slab's existing cracks get isolated with membrane before tile goes over them, because a crack that moves will print through anything bonded directly to it.

Wood and wood-look products behave differently in desert humidity than the national instructions assume. Solid wood movement is real here — it is why engineered products and quality resilient planks dominate Arizona remodels — and every wood-family product still needs acclimation time and correct expansion gaps, hidden under base and shoe, to live through a Phoenix August and a January heating season without complaint.

Sequencing against cabinetry is a genuine design decision. Floating floors generally should not be pinned under cabinets; tile under cabinets changes appliance and counter heights; hard floors first versus cabinets first changes how a future remodel behaves. There is a right answer per material and per room, and it is decided on the drawings rather than argued on site.

Transitions are where a flooring package looks resolved or improvised — new tile meeting original flooring at a doorway, a height change between materials, the direction a plank floor runs relative to the light and the long walls. Small decisions, all of them visible for the life of the house, all of them cheap to decide early.

Why does the slab need grinding or leveling before the floor goes down?
Because the manufacturer's flatness tolerance is a real installation requirement, not a suggestion. Over a high spot, tile rocks and plank floors bounce; over a dip, joints open. Correcting the slab is cheaper than living with a floor that announces the slab's history.
Is solid hardwood a bad idea in Phoenix?
Not automatically, but it is the most movement-prone choice in a climate that swings from monsoon humidity to single-digit winters indoors. Engineered wood gives the same surface with far more dimensional stability, which is why it is the usual recommendation here. If solid wood matters to you, it is a conversation about acclimation and expectations, not a refusal.
Do floors go in before or after cabinets?
It depends on the material. Floating floors should run up to cabinets, not under them, so cabinets first. Tile often runs under for height and future-proofing reasons. It is decided during design because counter heights, appliance fits and dishwasher clearances all hang off the answer.
