Remodels routinely outgrow the electrical system they inherited. Added circuits for appliances, a kitchen island, outdoor outlets or an accessory dwelling can exceed what an older panel or service was sized for, and that is a load calculation rather than a guess.
The panel question is asked during design because its answer changes the project. A service upgrade involves the utility, permits and inspection sequencing of its own — discovering the need mid-construction stalls every electrical scope behind it. Asking early costs a calculation; asking late costs the schedule.
Lighting layout is decided before drywall closes. Moving a can light after the ceiling is finished costs several trades, not one. The design conversation covers layers — general, task and accent light — plus switching that matches how the rooms are actually used, and dimming as the default for living spaces rather than an upgrade.
Code is not optional and inspection is part of the sequence. Modern requirements — arc-fault and ground-fault protection, tamper-resistant receptacles, kitchen and bath circuit rules — apply to remodeled scopes, and rough-in inspection happens before walls close. The schedule is built around those fixed points, not around wishing they were flexible.
This work is performed by licensed electrical contractors. Monarch's role is design and coordination: the load and layout questions answered before demolition, the trade scheduled at the right moments, and the inspections sequenced so nothing waits on a wall that closed too early.

Questions
Answers we can give honestly.
- Will our existing panel handle the remodel?
- That is a load calculation, and it is one of the first questions design answers. Many older Valley panels are full or undersized for a modern kitchen plus an island, let alone an ADU or a future EV charger. If an upgrade is needed, knowing early means the utility and permit steps run alongside design instead of stopping construction.
- Who actually performs the electrical work?
- Licensed electrical contractors — that is a legal requirement, not a preference. Monarch designs the scope, coordinates the trade and sequences the inspections; the electrical work itself is performed by the appropriately licensed trade.
- Why do lighting decisions have to happen so early?
- Because every fixture location is a wire above a ceiling that will be closed and finished. On the drawings, moving a light is a revision; after drywall and paint, it is a patch, a texture match and a repaint. Early is simply where that decision is cheap.
